We are the Anglican and Methodist church serving the people of Sturry, Broad Oak, Fordwich, Hersden and Westbere, three miles from Canterbury city centre. In our Local Ecumenical Partnership, our worship follows both Anglican and Methodist traditions and is led by ministers and lay people from both denominations. We play an active part of the governance of both of our denominations and ecumenically.
Our local population is just over 7000 people, but it is planned nearly to double over the next few years.
We aspire to be very much a church for the whole community. As well as weekly Sunday worship, Sturry church hosts many church and community groups. We run regular half-term
events for children. There are a Loss and Bereavement Group, weekly craft sessions, monthly “Soup on Saturday”, and weekly coffee mornings. Sturry Singers is a community choir, based at the church. We are also a “Silver” Eco Church and are working towards the Gold level.
We maintain strong links with local schools, especially with our near neighbours, The Junior King’s School, Canterbury and with Sturry CE Primary School. We also work with the Probation Service, enabling offenders to undertake unpaid community work instead of a prison sentence.
We have responsibility for two Grade 1 Listed church buildings at Sturry and Westbere. Although Fordwich church, also Grade 1 Listed, is in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, the churchyard is our responsibility. In the past few years St Nicholas’ church has benefitted from extensive fundraising, totalling over £350,000, to instal a new heating system, to effect major repairs, to make its heritage more widely known and to make the church a community asset.
Our monthly church magazine, Link Up, is professionally printed. 450 copies are widely distributed in the area we serve, with many paying a subscription to receive it.
